A theoretical investigation is conducted to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a new design of ducted-fan vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The analysis which provides preliminary data is based on the geometric information of the vehicle and used semi-empirical aerodynamic methods. This UAV is designed to be able to perform transition manoeuvres between vertical and horizontal flights, and has some novelty in its configuration. A computer program has been written to estimate the aerodynamic coefficients, stability and control derivatives for both longitudinal and lateral parts. Refining the analysis is planned for future works that includes incorporating the duct aerodynamic into the whole vehicle, modelling the propeller aerodynamic, perform computational fluid dynamics analysis and/or determine the aerodynamic characteristic of this UAV experimentally through wind tunnel test.

A full time position for Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) is available. GRA attachment in the research leads to the award of the Master's degree by research, and will receive monthly allowance. Basic experience in CFD simulation using FLUENT and wind tunnel test is an advantage, although not compulsory. Kindly email me your expression of interest together with your CV.
